Week Two

I want to start out this weeks journal with some quotes from Randy Pausch's last lecture

"We actually don’t want our kids to learn football....But we send our kids out to learn much more important things. Teamwork, sportsmanship, perseverance, etcetera, etcetera"

"But remember, the brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people."

"Jon Snoddy. One of the things he told me was that wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you. He said, when you’re pissed off at somebody and you’re angry at them, you just haven’t given them enough time. Just give them a little more time and they’ll almost always impress you"

Something I have been pondering a lot lately is what it means to be an entrepreneur. Becoming an entrepreneur is not about becoming filthy rich. It's not about being wildly successful or famous. Becoming an entrepreneur is about being a leader and a positive influence to the community, country, or even the world depending on the scale of your business. One of the reasons that I want to be an entrepreneur is that I want to create jobs. Here in Brazil, a lot of people are unemployed and really struggling to find a way to make enough money to pay their bills and put food in the fridge. I want to be able to create a job for myself and others as well. I want to be an entrepreneur because I want to make a difference in the lives of others. I want to be a light and an influence.

It was helpful to do the stars and steppingstones activity. I learned a lot about myself. The biggest positive that came from the activity was a release of anxiety. I was really worried about my future and deciding what I want to do with it. I've realized that my desires to be a good wife and mother make up my final star. I don't necessarily need to pick some grandeur career in order to accomplish something. The important questions that we ask at the end of our lives has shown me that. I want to raise fantastic kids that do good to all those around me. That will be my biggest contribution to the community. That's how I will make the world a better place.

Now I will answer the questions required for the course.

  • Why do you think Randy Pausch was able to achieve so many of his childhood dreams?
Randy Pausch was able to achieve his dreams because he was determined to achieve them. He would not accept the idea of not achieving them, and whenever an opportunity arouse he was prepare to do whatever necessary to get the gig he wanted.

  • Do you feel that dreaming is important? Why or why not?
Dreaming is important because it makes life interesting and encourages hard work. When we dream we push ourselves to do more than the ordinary. It brings positivity to our lives and leads us to becoming better than we are and sometimes better than we even know we can be. It also builds self confidence when we accomplish our dreams.

  • Discuss at least one of your childhood dreams. Explain why you believe you can or cannot achieve this dream.
When I was a child wanted to be a teacher. I would set up my stuffed animals and give them lessons. Usually it was like a primary lesson and we would sing a lot of songs. Then as a teen, I wanted to be a singer. I can still accomplish these dreams if I want to. I think I will, but not in the way that I imagined them. I will teach my children and in callings in the church. I will sing and write music, but I won't strive to be famous. My family is the most important thing and I don't want to take too much time or attention from them.
